Competitions

Below is a list of competitions that you might be interested in entering. They are listed by their closing date. 

March:
  • 7 May: Top Outdoor Spot Competition  Details here.  You can send in entries of your favourite outdoor spot to all or any category: "Best Photo", “Best Drawing” and "Best Description" competitions. 

The prizes

The winners of each category will receive a Macpac Kahuna backpack, Skellerup Red Band gumboots, and a copy of In the Bush from Potton & Burton.
Each winner will also receive a safety whistle and pack liner sponsored by Mountain Safety Council, in addition to a Therm-a-Rest insulated mattress (best photo), MSR Cook System (best description), or Platypus Hydration System (best drawing) for each category winner.
Their schools will each win a Packabench mobile seating system from Packaworld International, a copy of Tramping in New Zealand from Potton & Burton, and a Cancer Society of New Zealand 1L bottle of sunscreen.
Second place in each category will win a Macpac Burst head torch, a copy of In the Bush from Potton & Burton, and a Mountain Safety Council pack liner and safety whistle. Their schools will each win a copy of Tramping in New Zealand.
Third place in each category will win a copy of In the Bush from Potton & Burton, and a Mountain Safety Council pack liner and safety whistle. Their schools will each win a copy of Tramping in New Zealand.

  • The Elsie Locke Writing PrizeThis is an amazing opportunity for NZ Year 7 and 8s! Dates to be released in April.

  May

  • 1 May: Commonwealth Essay Competition  Open to all Commonwealth citizens (there is an under 14 year old category), the Essay Competition offers young people the opportunity to make their voice heard on a global platform and engage with issues important to them. Max words = 750. Details here
  • 31 May: NZ Poetry Society Competititon - poems/haiku
TOPIC A Commonwealth for Peace.
JUNIOR CATEGORY
  1. What is in your Toolbox for Peace? 
  2. My peaceful place.
  3. How can children and young people come together to build a peaceful society?
  4. ‘Peace cannot be learnt from a book or from religion. You have to reach out and touch the nations.’ How does this relate to the Commonwealth?

June:

Re-Draft offers writers aged 13-19 the chance to be published. Submissions of short stories and poetry will be considered. Click here for details.
